In short
A forensic audit of a borrower account examines how the money lent was used: tracing funds, testing end use, and identifying diversion, siphoning, related-party transfers or manipulation of books. Banks and NBFCs use it to decide on fraud classification of red-flagged accounts and to support recovery. Spectra Forensics documents the borrower’s response alongside the findings, so the process respects natural justice.

Guide
What you need to know
When does a bank commission a forensic audit?
Typically when an account is red-flagged. Under the RBI (Commercial Banks – Fraud Risk Management) Directions, 2026, which replaced the 2024 Master Directions, a bank may have a red-flagged account investigated by an external or internal audit under its Board-approved policy, before deciding whether to classify it as fraud.
Is the borrower entitled to be heard?
The Supreme Court held in SBI v. Rajesh Agarwal (2023) that borrowers must receive notice, an opportunity to represent and a reasoned order before fraud classification. In SBI v. Amit Iron (April 2026) the Court clarified that this does not require a personal hearing. Our process records the borrower’s responses so the lender’s decision is documented.
What does the audit examine?
End use of funds against sanction terms, fund flows across the borrower’s and group accounts, related-party and round-tripping transactions, stock and receivables statements against books, and the borrower’s explanations. Findings are structured for credit committees, recovery teams and, where needed, investigating agencies.

Frequently asked questions
What is a red-flagged account?
An account showing early warning signals of possible fraud, which the lender must examine under its fraud risk management framework before deciding whether to classify it as fraud.
How is a forensic audit different from a stock audit or concurrent audit?
Stock and concurrent audits verify routine compliance. A forensic audit investigates whether funds were diverted or the books manipulated, to an evidentiary standard.
Who is a wilful defaulter?
Broadly, a borrower or guarantor that defaults despite the ability to pay, diverts funds or disposes of security, as defined in the RBI’s directions on wilful defaulters. Forensic findings often inform that assessment.
Do you work for NBFCs and fintech lenders too?
Yes, as well as banks, insurers and financial institutions.
